BMI is a general screening tool and does not directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, age or ethnicity. It can be less accurate for athletes, older adults and during pregnancy. Talk to a healthcare professional about what is healthy for you.
What your BMI means
Body mass index is a simple ratio of weight to height that places you in a broad category — underweight, healthy, overweight or obese. It is widely used because it is quick and needs only two measurements, but it is best treated as a starting point. Waist measurement, body composition and overall lifestyle give a fuller picture of health.
Frequently asked questions
- How is BMI calculated?
- BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²). For imperial units we convert pounds and feet/inches to metric first, so the result is the same either way.
- What is a healthy BMI?
- For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is in the obese range.
- Is BMI accurate for everyone?
- BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people may have a high BMI while being healthy, and it can be less reliable for older adults, children and pregnant people.
