WPM counts whole words divided by minutes. Standard WPM uses the typing-test convention of 5 characters = 1 word, which is more consistent across passages. CPM is characters (excluding spaces) per minute.
When to use a WPM calculator
A live typing test is great for measuring raw speed, but sometimes you already have the numbers — a passage you transcribed, an essay you wrote against a timer, or a chapter you just read. This calculator turns “how many words in how much time” into an exact WPM without re-typing anything.
It's equally useful for reading speed. Time yourself reading a section, paste it in, and the WPM result tells you how fast you read. Comprehension-level reading usually lands between 200 and 250 WPM; skimming runs much faster but trades accuracy for speed.
The formula
Words per minute is simply words ÷ minutes. Standard WPM, the version typing tests report, is (characters without spaces ÷ 5) ÷ minutes, because five characters is treated as one “word.” That convention keeps scores fair whether the text is full of short or long words.
