- What is EXIF data?
- EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is metadata embedded in photos by your camera or phone. It can include the date and time the photo was taken, the camera model, exposure settings, and — critically — the exact GPS coordinates of where you were standing when you took the photo.
- Why should I remove EXIF data before sharing photos?
- If you share a photo online with EXIF data intact, anyone can extract your exact location, the device you used, and when the photo was taken. This is a privacy risk for journalists, activists, domestic abuse survivors, and anyone who doesn't want their home address or current location exposed.
- Does this tool upload my photos to a server?
- No. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. The EXIF data is read locally, and the clean image is generated locally. Your photo is never uploaded to any server.
- How does the EXIF removal work?
- The tool draws your image onto an HTML5 Canvas element and exports it as a new JPEG or PNG file. Canvas-rendered images do not include EXIF metadata, so the resulting file is completely clean — no camera info, no GPS data, no timestamps.
- Will the image quality be affected?
- JPEG images are re-compressed at 95% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos. PNG images are lossless and retain full quality. The file size will typically be smaller because the EXIF metadata (which can be 10-100KB) is removed.
- Which image formats are supported?
- JPG/JPEG and PNG files are supported. WebP files can also be processed. HEIC files from iPhones are not supported directly — convert them to JPG first using your phone's built-in tools.
