About the Hebrew calendar
The Hebrew calendar blends lunar months with solar years using a precise 19-year cycle of leap months. - What is the Hebrew calendar?
- The Hebrew (Jewish) calendar is a lunisolar calendar: months follow the moon, but leap months keep the year aligned with the solar seasons. Years are counted from the traditional date of creation and marked AM (Anno Mundi).
- Why do some years have 13 months?
- To keep festivals in their proper seasons, a leap month (Adar I) is added in 7 of every 19 years. In those years the month normally called Adar becomes Adar I, followed by Adar II. The converter handles this automatically.
- When does a Hebrew date begin?
- In Jewish tradition the day begins at sunset the evening before. This converter aligns Hebrew dates with the Gregorian calendar day, so for observances that start in the evening you may need to account for the prior night.
