Tips for great recordings
- 1.Close notifications — Enable Do Not Disturb mode before recording to prevent pop-ups.
- 2.Choose a single window — When prompted, select a specific window instead of your entire screen for cleaner recordings.
- 3.WebM format — Recordings are saved as .webm files. You can convert to MP4 using any free converter, or play WebM directly in Chrome, Edge, and VLC.
- 4.No time limit — Record as long as you need. The file is saved directly to your device with no upload required.
How browser screen recording works
This tool uses two browser APIs that run entirely in your browser:
- getDisplayMedia — Prompts you to select a screen, window, or tab to share. The browser handles all the permissions and capture.
- MediaRecorder— Takes the video (and optionally audio) stream and records it into a WebM file, chunk by chunk, all in your browser's memory.
When you click Stop, the recorded chunks are assembled into a single file and offered for download. At no point is the data sent to any server.

- Do I need to install a Chrome extension?
- No. This tool uses your browser's built-in screen recording APIs. Click Start Recording, grant permission when prompted, and it works. No extensions or plugins required.
- Is there a time limit on recordings?
- No. Record for as long as you need. The recording is stored in your browser's memory and saved directly to your device. There is no 5-minute cap like some other tools.
- What format are recordings saved in?
- Recordings are saved as WebM files, which play natively in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and VLC. If you need MP4 format, you can convert the WebM file using any free online converter or desktop tool like HandBrake.
- Is my recording uploaded to a server?
- No. All recording and processing happens locally in your browser using the MediaRecorder API. The video data never leaves your device. When you click Download, the file is saved directly from your browser memory to your hard drive.
- Can I record my microphone along with the screen?
- Yes. Click 'Record screen + mic' and your browser will request microphone access in addition to screen sharing. If you deny microphone permission, it will fall back to screen-only recording.
- Which browsers support screen recording?
- Chrome, Edge, and Firefox all support the required APIs (getDisplayMedia and MediaRecorder). Safari has limited support for screen recording. For the best experience, use Chrome or Edge.
